"Greatest Love"
Just as the second week of Advent begins, we arrive at National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Today, United States flags will be flown at half-mast across the country. The reason is obvious, to call attention to the ultimate sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians on this day seventy-nine years ago. As this important date drifts further away from memory, it’s easy to overlook both its importance and significance in the life of our country.
It’s difficult to imagine the dramatic impact that Pearl Harbor had on the Holiday Season of 1941, and it gives us an opportunity to remember some important people this Holiday Season: Our men and women of the Armed Services. Whether they are serving our country at home or abroad this Holiday Season, many of them will be away from their homes and families.
When we are struggling with our own issues, sometimes it can be difficult to recognize the challenges faced by other people. This year, our military service members are continuing to serve us in the midst of the pandemic, trying to stay safe and healthy in their own environment while also worrying about the welfare of their loved ones back home. Likewise, their families back home are concerned about their special man or woman, mom or dad, or son or daughter.
Today, take some time to thank God for those who are serving our country. If you personally know a service member who is currently deployed or otherwise away from their home, consider sending them a note or a card and let them know how thankful you are for their service, especially this time of year. And while we’re at it, let’s not forget their families and loved ones who might also be able to use a little Christmas cheer.
Find a way to love on a service member this Holiday Season!
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13, ESV)
