 Lent Day 25, Saturday, March 14, 2026

“Collect or Purchase Items for Charity”

Today’s Lenten challenge should be simple: collect or purchase items for a charitable cause. Participants can choose to give to anyone or anything that has a need. Individuals, animals, organizations, and, of course, churches are all included. What or whom will you choose to collect for?

As you gather supplies, it may also be helpful to think about when you plan to deliver the donation. Today’s challenge does not require you to make the donation today, but if you never plan when it will be distributed, it may never reach the people who need it.

If you are stumped, I can help. The Chapel is always collecting nonperishable food. You can drop it off at any Chapel door at any time of day, and we will take it from there.  In addition, the Chapel selects a different local charitable organization each month to receive goods and financial support.

This month, the Chapel is collecting luggage and backpacks for Allstar Children’s Foundation, an incredible organization that serves foster children throughout Southwest Florida.  One unfortunate reality for many children entering foster care is that they often have almost nothing to hold their clothing or personal belongings. Many arrive with their possessions in trash bags. One simple way to help is to purchase duffel bags, backpacks, or similar items online and have them sent directly to the Chapel. We will make sure they are delivered where they are needed.

The Chapel’s thrift store, “The Lord’s Warehouse,” also receives good-quality clothing, home furnishings, and toys. These items are sold, and the proceeds are used to support needs throughout our local community and at the church.  The Lord’s Warehouse receives drop-offs on its front porch, day or night.  Easy-peasy.

What will you collect today? Clean out those closets and pantries. Donate the sewing machine you never use or the extra set of dishes, cookware, and glassware sitting in the cabinet. In the process, you will help someone who truly needs it.

One more thought. If you do not live in our little corner of the tropics, contact your own local church. I am certain they are collecting for worthy individuals and organizations in your community as well. And when in doubt, buy a little extra nonperishable food. Everyone, and I mean everyone, needs it.

“Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop. I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.”  (2 Corinthians 9:7, The Message)
